886,462. Cast-surface coated paper manufacture. MEAD CORPORATION. Jan. 20, 1960, No. 2083/60. Class 96. In the production of cast-surface, high gloss finish, mineral-coated paper, the mineral coating, whilst still mouldable is brought into contact with a chromium casting surface, e.g. of a belt or drum, which has been passivated, i.e. it in a state of inertness or non-reactivity to chemical reagents, produced preferably by mildly acidic oxidizing agents such as dilute nitric or acetic acid, which may be applied by a cloth, spraying, or flooding; the passivation facilitates release of the dried paper from the drum &c. Re-activation of the chrome surface by coating compositions of pH as high as 11 may be avoided by using a casting surface temperature just below that at which steam " blisters " are formed, so that drying is as rapid as possible. 1% of tributyl phosphate may be included in the coating composition to protect the chrome against reactivation. The invention may be used with re-wetted coated paper. Specification 838,180 is referred to.
