Abstract

505,734. Sodium monoxide and peroxide. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. July 19, 1938, No. 21466. Convention date, July 28, 1937. [Class 1 (ii)] Sodium monoxide of approximately spherical form and practically free from dust is obtained by oxidizing metallic sodium in the presence of sodium monoxide in a rotating tube whilst passing dried oxygen-containing gases through the mixture, a preliminary charge of sodium monoxide in approximately spherical form being introduced which is converted by oxidation of the added sodium within the temperature range 180-230‹ C. into larger approximately spherical structures. External heating of the rotary tube should preferably be avoided and the metallic sodium may be introduced into the tube at relatively large intervals of time. The growth of the spherical particles may be regulated by a control of the speed of rotation of the rotary tube. The monoxide may be subsequently oxidized to peroxide in a rotating tube. The product maintains its spherical form during this further oxidation.
