Abstract
g -Ferric oxide in finely-divided powder form is produced by heating finely-divided iron oxalate or formate to below 600 DEG C. in a substantially inert atmosphere, until the material is converted to ferroferric oxide, and then subjecting the product to controlled oxidation in air at a temperature below 350 DEG C. e.g. 100-200 DEG C. The inert atmosphere of the first operation may be steam, carbon dioxide or mixtures thereof with which a small amount of hydrogen or carbon monoxide may be present, a suitable mixture being that obtained by combustion of town gas. The material may be damped with water in the oxidation operation. The particle size of the iron formate or oxalate should be less than 1 micron diameter. The product may be used in the formation of a magnetizable coating on recording tape.
