Abstract
The air blast to a blast furnace or low shaft furnace is augmented by the addition of a gas mixture including oxygen and a non-reducing gas containing carbon dioxide and water vapour, the ratio by volume of oxygen to carbon dioxide and water together lying in the range 2:1 to 6:1 and the added gas being produced by combustion of a gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon to form a product containing 300-600 mgm. of carbon per thousand standard cubic metres. The total blast is such that the volume of gas leaving the furnace is within the range 1000-2000 standard cubic metres per ton of charge; the gas may contain carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in a ratio within the range 4:1 to 8:1, and may be used for (a) synthesis of ammonia, (b) hydrocarbon synthesis, (c) pre-reduction of ore, (d) generation of heat by combustion of the carbon monoxide content, (e) generation of electricity by use of the gas in a gas turbine.
