Abstract

A homogeneous gaseous mixture comprises up to 75% v/v. nitrous oxide in admixture with a "permanent" gas confined in a container at a pressure such that the partial pressure of nitrous oxide is greater than 50 atmospheres. For inhalation as an anaesthetic gas, the "permanent" gas is oxygen and the nitrous oxide content may be 50 to 60% v/v. Up to 5% v/v. of cyclopropane or up to 1% v/v. of halothane may also be present. The gaseous mixture is stored in a pressure container at 132 atmospheres. The gaseous mixture is produced by charging the gases in the predetermined required proportions into a pressure container until a pressure is reached at which the partial pressure of nitrous oxide is greater than 50 atmospheres. The required amount of nitrous oxide is charged into a valved pressure container and the permanent gas is added either continuously or intermittently so as to allow equilibrium to take place, the contents of the pressure container being agitated, if desired. Alternatively, the container may be inverted and the permanent gas bubbled through the liquid nitrous oxide. Again, the gases may be pre-mixed before being pumped into the pressure container. In general, the gases are stored at 132 atmospheres pressure.
