Abstract
The polymerization of chloroprene is inhibited by contacting it with nitric oxide. Chloroprene vapour is mixed with traces of nitric oxide, preferably in the presence of an inert gaseous diluent such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, or argon. Preferably nitrogen containing traces of nitric oxide is bubbled through the kettle of the still, or is introduced into the distillation vessel directly above the surface of the distilland. Suitable amounts of nitric oxide are from about 0.01 per cent by volume. Examples are given of the effect of various inhibitors including nitric oxide on the restriction of polymerization of chloroprene.
