Abstract

681,614. Furnace atmospheres. BIRLEC, Ltd., and HANCOCK, P. F. April 4, 1951 [Jan. 4, 1950], No. 171/50. Class 51 (ii). In an endothermic furnace atmosphere generator of the kind in which a protective atmosphere is produced by catalytic reaction between coal gas or other hydrocarbon-containing fuel gas and air at a ratio considerably higher than that required for normal combustion, a retort 1 containing the catalyst bed 2 is surrounded by a combustion chamber 4 supplied at 5 with a mixture of fuel gas and air, combustion gases being lead off through a pipe 6 and condenser 7 to the inlet of the retort where additional fuel gas is added at 9 before the mixture passes through the catalyst retort. A controlled offtake 8 is provided for the removal of excess combustion gases and the same gas, e.g. coal gas, may be used at both stages or a hydrocarbon gas, e.g. butane, may be added to the combustion gases. A coal gas : air mixture in the proportion of 1 4 by volume burnt in the combustion chamber 4, the resultant combustion gases being mixed with 1¢ times their volume of coal gas and passed through the retort, produces a gas having the composition 0.5 per cent CO 2 , 22 per cent CO, 31 per cent H 2 and the balance mainly nitrogen. Passing a mixture of the aforesaid combustion gases and butane in the proportion of 200 : 7 by volume, on the other hand, gives an atmosphere gas having the composition 0.5 per cent CO 2 , 21 per cent CO, 12 per cent H 2 , the remainder being nitrogen. Using an initial coal gas : air mixture of 1 : 2 by volume and resultant combustion gases and butane in the proportion of 200 : 3 by volume the percentage of CO is reduced, the atmosphere gas so formed comprising 0.5 per cent CO 2 , 12.5 per cent CO, 17.5 per cent H 2 and the balance nitrogen.
