Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Ceramic shell moulds are produced by dipping a pattern of wax or other expendable material in a slurry composition comprising an admixture of a refractory particulate solid and an acidstabilized, alcoholic silica sol which has been produced by deacidifying an acidic sol that has been obtained by the electrolysis of an aqueous alcoholic solution of sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid using an anode comprising silicon and then acidifying the sol and optionally concentrating the sol such that it has a silica concentration of 5-50% by weight; suspending the coated pattern in a fluidized bed of particulate refractory material to provide a stucco coating; transferring the assembly to a chamber containing ammonia to set the slurry coating; and then heating the assembly to dry the coating. The dipping, stuccoing, setting and drying are repeated until 4-7 coatings of each kind have been applied, after which the pattern is removed and the mould fired. The refractory particulate solid is preferably molochite and the alcoholic silica sol is preferably stabilized by sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid.
