1287432 Producing a ceramic mould MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 25 June 1970 [31 July 1969] 38527/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] A ceramic shell mould is obtained by coating a pattern with a slurry of particulate refractory material in a solution prepared by mixing an ethyl silicate having a silica content of 39-43% by weight with from 8-9% of its weight of H 2 O in a mutual solvent e.g. ethanol, isopropanol in the presence of a sufficient amount of an acid which is a catalyst for the hydrolysis of the ethyl silicate e.g. HCl to give a final pH of 1-3, and the coated pattern is then exposed to NH 3 vapour for not more than 90 seconds to gel the coating.
