Abstract
A refractory mould is prepared by pouring around a pattern of an article to be cast a moulding mixture comprising a slurry formed by mixing a dry aggregate with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate to which an aqueous solution of sodium acid phosphate has been added immediately prior to the mixing whereby a silicic acid gel is precipitated and binds the aggregate together, then baking to decompose the gel and form silica which is the final binder. Concentrated hydrochloric acid may be present in the silicate solution. In the example, a wax pattern is first cast, then sprayed with zircon flour suspended in a mixture of methylated spirit, ethyl silicate and hydrochloric acid. When dry the pattern is dipped into a suspension of silica flour, silica sand and magnesia in ethyl silicate, methylated spirit and water, and then "stuccoed" with firebricks. Such coated pattern is set up in a mould box, and the slurry of the mould mixture poured therein and vibrated. When set the mould is stripped and dried. The preferred aggregate is a mixture of magnesia silica flour and sand and crushed firebrick.
