Abstract
In an investment casting mould the lining is wholly or partially constituted of fused silica. Powdered fused silica may be suspended in a silicate binder with or without the addition of refractories such as dry flint powder, crushed quartz, zircon, alumina and magnesia, and a pattern may be coated with successive coatings by dipping or spraying, each successive layer having a smaller proportion of fused silica than the previous one. In one embodiment the slurry comprises fused silica and powdered zircon in a ratio of 1 : 3, suspended in a binder of sodium silicate, soap solution, water and a wetting agent.
