Abstract

688,652. Mould materials; moulding processes; moulds. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Sept. 14, 1951 [Aug. 15, 1950], No. 20190/50. Class 83 (i). A mould, for precision casting, made by the " lost-wax " process, comprises water-based primary and secondary investments separated by a waterproof layer. This is applied to the primary investment, e.g. by dipping, spraying or painting, and may comprise synthetic resin. The primary investment may comprise a thin shell of zircon bonded with sodium silicate and water and the proofing layer a solution of phenolic-type resin with an accelerator, e.g. a commercial Novalak powder in methylethylketone. Curing of the resin layer may be accelerated by ultra-violet light or by dipping in a catalyst, e.g. ammonia for phenol-formaldehyde.
