[Also in Divisions C3 and C7] A protective or decorative metallic coating is formed on surfaces of a casting, e.g. a deck cleat or valve body of iron or steel, by applying a slurry of powdered coating metal (e.g. Ni, Ni-Cu or other Ni-containing alloy, Ni and Cu, Cr or stainless steel) and a binder in water to surfaces of a mould or core, or to surfaces of a consumable (polystyrene) pattern to be put into contact with the mould, and allowing the slurry to dry before casting the main metal (at 1288- 1621‹ C.); the binder is 0À05-1% methyl cellulose, or 0À05 to 35% sodium silicate or polyacrylate, of the slurry by weight. The coating metal slurry is applied to the mould &c. as a paste, by painting, spraying or dipping. A green or dry sand mould may be used and a coated sand mould or core may be oven-dried for 1 hour at 149‹ C. to give a coating <SP>1</SP>/ 32 -<SP>1</SP>/ 2 inch thick. The cast metal may have a melting point above or below that of the coating metal. The particle size of the metal powder may be up to minus 100 mesh. It constitutes 50-85% by weight of the slurry. Core material and coating.-100 lbs. of silica sand, 1 1b. of bentonite and 1 1b. of "Mogul" (Trade Mark) binder are mixed and mulled. Two quarts of linseed oil and 3 quarts of water are then added. Cores moulded from the mixture are baked at 204‹ C. for 3 hours, then given a mica wash and the baking repeated. The cores are then painted with a nickel powder slurry containing 0-25% methyl cellulose to give a coating <SP>1</SP>/ 8 inch thick.
