Abstract

1,219,379. Lined metal moulds; casting composite moulds. NAGANO PREFECTURE. 26 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968; 24 July, 1968], No. 10353/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] A porous metal mould 1, 8 is produced by moulding and solidifying a particle-binder mixture, prepared by mixing and kneading a copper, copper alloy (e.g. brass) or nickel alloy powder and sodium silicate with iron or iron alloy, e.g. steel, granules as the main component by weight, on a pattern set in a moulding flask 4 so that a shell 1 having a pattern-shaped surface is formed mostly of the granules, removing the pattern from the moulding flask, and then casting a molten metal 8 on the side of the shell opposite to the pattern surface, using a backing sand 6, and a lining of sand 5 in the flask so that the shell 1 and metal 8 are made integral on solidification of the metal, thereby forming a metal mould. After removing the pattern from the moulding flask, an exothermic agent 10 may be applied to the shell before casting to facilitate the brazing and fluxing action of the powder and penetration by the cast metal. The shell binder is hardened by CO 2 , alcohol or methanol. The particle size of the granules is 150-10 mesh "Tyler" (Trade Mark) whilst the particle size of the powder is preferably smaller than 10 micron. The metal granules may be mixed or painted with a flux such as boric acid or borax.
