Abstract

1,057,535. Composite castings. AMERICAN BRAKE SHOE CO. April 14, 1964 [May 10, 1963], No. 15382/64. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F2] A casting comprises undissolved particles substantially uniformly distributed throughout a continuous metal matrix in which the voids between the particles are penetrated during casting by the molten metal under pressure so that each particle is substantially enveloped by the molten metal. The casting metal may be ferrous or non-ferrous and selected from a group consisting of iron, steel, copper-base metal, lead-tin, aluminium and aluminium alloy. The particles may be metallic or non-metallic or a combination of each selected from a group consisting of graphite, silica, alumina, mullite. sillimanite, garnet, silicon carbide, P.T.F.E. resin, iron grit, steel shot, chromite and emery. A mould 18 for casting an article such as a railway brake shoes comprises a cope 20, Fig. 2 (not shown) and a drag 21 containing a backing material faced with a ceramic investment 26 forming a mould cavity 41. A steel back-plate member 30 providing toe guides 31 and 32, lugs 34 and strap 35 is incorporated in the mould. To effect forcing of the metal into the mould the cavity is evacuated through vent passages 43 which are filled with steel shot 50 and steel wool 51. The solid particles are placed in the mould cavity prior to assembly of the mould and are preheated, the cope 21 is then positioned and the mould cavity is evacuated. The molten metal is then poured into the mould through sprue 40 and completely surrounds the particles. The metal does not pass into the vent passages 43, the steel shot therein acting as a chill. The metal on solidifying becomes bonded to the metal back-plate to form a composite brake shoe. Numerous examples of suitable material compositions for producing a casting as previously described are given in the Specification. The mould may be heated prior to pouring the molten metal.
