Abstract
In a method of wetting and coating an article with molten metal the article is located in a mould 18 into which molten metal is poured, the article is then subjected to torsional vibrations to effect wetting and coating of the article by the molten metal so as to produce a secure bond between the article and metal when solidified. In the embodiment described a cast iron brake drum lining is attached to one end of a shaft and is located in the mould. An air operated hoop type torsional vibrator is attached to the other end of the shaft so that when molten metal (Al or Al alloy) is poured into the mould and the vibrator actuated, wetting and subsequent bonding occurs between the liner and the poured metal. The composite article produced is a brake drum of Al, or Al alloy with a bonded cast iron liner. The mould may be heated to control the solidification of the Al.
