819,077. Casting composite articles; thermoaluminic reaction processes. ACIERIES DE GENNEVILLIERS S.A. June 21, 1956 [July 5, 1955], No. 19283/56. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (4). In the welding together of the ends of bars, angles, rails, &c., in moulds by pouring in the molten metal product of an alumino-thermic reaction, the ends are preheated by supplying an alumino-thermic reaction product to at least one auxiliary mould attached to each end, said auxiliary mould not being in communication with the inside of the main mould, the heat of said last reaction being conducted to the ends which are to be welded together. The auxiliary moulds 7 and the main mould 3, with gates and runners 4, 8, 9, and vents 11 formed of sheet metal, Fig. 1, are packed around with moulding sand 12, Figs. 2 and 4. The auxiliary moulds may be filled with the product of an aluminothermic reaction such as metal and are of a size to prevent adhesion of the aluminothermic product therein to the parts to be joined, or said parts may be coated with a refractory. Alternatively, the auxiliary moulds may be filled with a substance which burns at a high temperature, such as slow-burning cellulosic gumpowders.
