Abstract
694,595. Casting composite articles. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 14, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4619/51. Class 83 (i). Moulding processes.-In a method of precision casting, the pattern consists of a metal or alloy of low-melting point or of a thermoplastic material of similar cooling and setting characteristics and is coated with a thin skin of a metal or metals having a higher melting point than that of the pattern so that after the melting of the pattern the skin remains in the mould to receive the casting metal, for which it provides a protective coating. The skin is wholly or mainly of higher melting point than the cast metal and any part of the skin having a lower melting point is such as to alloy with the casting metal. A pattern of a zinc alloy is made by casting the alloy into a master mould and is then given a thin coating of copper, followed by a heavy coating of chromium. The coated pattern is invested in the mould material, preferably sand rammed and pressed around the pattern. During the baking of the mould, the alloy melts and is run-off, leaving in situ a skin or shell of chromium into which the casting metal, usually steel, is poured or injected. The copper coating serves to bond the chromium and the cast metal to form a chromium-coated article. Chromium coated steel blades for gas turbines may be made by this method. A plastic of the poly-vinylchloride group may be used for the pattern instead of an alloy.
