Abstract

1,044,596. Casting composite articles; making pistons; forging. H. MAHLE and E. MAHLE, [trading as MAHLE KOMM. GES.]. March 3, 1965 [March 11, 1964], No. 9055/65. Headings B3A, B3F and B3H. [Also in Division F2] A piston such as for an internal combustion engine, comprises a main body 1 of a light metal and cast inserts 2, 3 of a metal having a higher melting point than that of the body, the inserts being formed with irregular-shaped projections and recesses which are filled with the material of the body. The inserts, which may be of cast iron, are formed with the irregular shaped recesses and projections by first applying a bonding agent to the surface of a sand mould, and then sprinkling thereon a granular material, such as quartz sand or fine-grain calcium carbonate. The casting operation is then effected and the granular material released from the insert by a solvent such as hydrochloric acid thereby producing the projections and recesses. The insert may be secured to the piston body by moulding the light metal about the insert and vibrating the mould so that the metal completely fills the recesses. In an alternative method, an insert 2, Fig. 3 (not shown) is placed on a shoulder 4 in a die 5 and a light metal blank 11 subjected to pressure by a ram 6 until the light metal partly spreads around the insert. Upon subsequent pressure operations, the insert is completely secured in the blank and the latter hollowed out into a piston.
