At least part of an ingot mould for casting ferrous metal is coated with a material, e.g. calcium carbonate in an aqueous solution of sodium silicate, which at the temperature of the molten metal will produce orthosilicate of calcium. The material is said to fuse violently and project the particles of the lining X and impurities contained in the casting jet towards the central surface portion of the melt. A layer of the material may also be applied to the surface of the melt.
