Cast-iron backing members for bi-metallic castings such as cylinder blocks and brake drums are centrifugally cast in a mould lined by scattering a sand-synthetic resin mix into the heated rotating mould so that it forms a doughy lining. The cast iron penetrates into the lining and flows around the sand grains, which are removed from the finished casting by chemical cleaning to leave a roughened surface suitable for bonding with aluminium which is pressure-cast thereon.
