Abstract

Foundry moulds are made by mixing a powdered metal e.g. cast iron, steel or aluminium, with a binder e.g. a polymerisable resin, pref. Novolak phenolic resin. The binder has =5% of the mould wt. The moulds produce no dust, have a high thermal conductivity and give less surface blemishes and porosity than prior art sand castings. The castings cool faster, giving a higher prodn. rate and the metal powder can be reclaimed after use more easily than sand.
