Abstract
1394270 Inoculating cast iron STETTNER & CO 29 Nov 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 55142/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] An inoculating composition for cast iron which, during casting, is placed in the mould comprises granules of an inoculating agent, e.g. Fe-Si, Ca-Si, embedded in a metal, e.g. Al, Sn, Zn. The composition may be made by locating inoculating agent granules in a mould and casting molten metal around them or by filling a mould with a mixture of inoculating agent granules (Fe-Si) and metal (Al) powder and heating the mixture to sinter it or to melt the metal (Al). A strainer core, Fig. 4 comprises a ceramic apertured plate 5 upon which is cast or sintered inoculating agent granules 1 embedded in metal 2. The bores 6 may be provided by locating steel core pins (not shown) in the mould when casting or sintering the composition 1, 2 on to the plate 5. The steel core pins may be replaced by iron tubes 7 to act as cores, which tubes 7 remain in the strainer core and are dissolved when cast iron is poured therethrough.
