Abstract
1309500 Bearings; impregnating ABEX CORP 25 May 1971 17070/71 Heading F2A [Also in Divisions B3 and C1] A method of making composite articles comprises heating a particulate material in the presence of a thermally decomposable binder to form a porous self-sustaining structure 35, locating said structure in a mould cavity having a depth greater than the thickness of the structure and introducing molten metal into said cavity so as to simultaneously impregnate the porous structure 35 and fill the unoccupied portion of the cavity. The molten metal used may be copper, bronze, aluminium or cast iron and the particulate material may be graphite, SiC MoS 2 or Al 2 O 3 or mixtures thereof, optionally together with Cu or Sn. Suitable decomposable binders include resins, silicones silicates and metallic phosphates. The casting operation may be carried out under pressure. The articles produced may be used as bearings or as friction elements for brakes and clutches.
