Abstract
1381603 Casting composite articles DAIDO SEIKO KK 22 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 59694/71 Heading B3F A method of making a metal article having a surface which is harder than the remainder of the article comprises providing molten metal 3, e.g. steel, in a mould 2, protecting the metal from oxidation by provision of an atmosphere of inert gas, placing on the metal a plate 1 made from compacted powder, and applying pressure to the plate 1 and metal 3. The plate 1 may be made from ceramic material, tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, or tantalum carbide, and a binder, e.g. a thermosetting resin, and may be provided with a backing 1b of asbestos. An inert gas is supplied to the mould cavity through nozzle 7 and the completed casting ejected by a piston 5.
