Abstract
1379157 Casting composite articles KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 19 April 1972 [19 April 1971] 18213/72 Heading B3F A body comprising a phase of hollow microspheres dispersed in a continuous metal phase is made by locating said microspheres in a die cavity, producing a partial vacuum in the cavity and using said vacuum to draw molten metal into the cavity. A positive pressure may be applied to the molten metal, e.g. by mean of a piston or pressurized gas, to assist the passage of metal into the die cavity. The microspheres may be made of carbon, glass, ceramics, silica, silica-alumina, silica sand or zirconia and may be provided with a coating of nickel, copper titanium carbide, silicon carbide, boron carbide, glass or silica. They may have a diameter between 10 and 1000 Á and a wall thickness of from 1 to 100 Á. Suitable metals include Al, Mg, Zn, Sn, Cu, Pb, Fe, Ni, Co, Bi, Be, Ti and Cr. The die, and thus the microspheres contained therein, may be heated prior to the introduction of the molten metal.
