Abstract
1379261 Making shaped precision metal articles; forging; casting processes R G BROOKS 16 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971 6 June 1972] 49646/71 and 26307/72 Headings B3A B3H and B3F [Also in Division C7] A precision metal article is made by spraying an atomized stream of molten metal or metal alloy on to a surface and working the deposited metal or metal alloy using a die. The surface may be flat or formed in a lower die 19 which is filled with metal or metal alloy and then moved under an upper die 28 for forging whilst still hot or after cooling. The forging dies are housed in a chamber 25 filled with inert or reducing gas, e.g. nitrogen. The metal or metal alloy may be carbon steel, alloy steel, aluminium, aluminium alloy, brass or phosphor bronze, or a mixture thereof. The mixture may be applied simultaneously or sucessively to produce layers. Metallic and/or non-metallic powders, fibres, filaments or whiskers may be incorporated in the metal deposited by spraying. The molten metal is supplied from a tundish 11 and atomized by gas jets 17 from an annular chamber 15 and cooled by further gas jets. The gas may be nitrogen, argon or compressed air. The degree of porosity of the article produced can be selected by changing the temperature of the molten metal so that the coalescing of the atomized particles varies. Masking plates can be used for the dies which may be coated with a releasing agent. In an example for producing a non-porous aluminium precision article the aluminium is heated to between 100 and 200 C. above its melting point and poured through a nozzle for atomization by gas at a pressure greater than 30 lb./in.<SP>2</SP> at room temperature to produce particles of between 100 and 200 microns size. The die is heated to between 100 and 200 C. to prevent drastic cooling of the particles. The precision metal article'may be a gear wheel, a connection rod, a filter or a shock absorber. The die or dies may be made of nickelchromium-molybdenum steel, chromium-molybdenum-vandadium steel, nickel based alloys or metallic carbides.
