Abstract
1357770 Composite strip HOMOGENEOUS METALS Inc 21 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59222/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A method of forming metallic strip 15 from a powder comprises converting a metallic powder to a molten metallic spray, applying the spray in an inert atmosphere to a moving metal foil 10 to form a substantially uniform molten layer thereon, the layer being thicker than the metal foil, cooling the metal foil and molten layer to solidify the layer, and consolidating said foil and solidified layer by applying pressure thereto. A strip of foil, e.g. Al, Ni, Cu or Fe, is fed from a coil 11 through a seal 12 to a chamber 13 where it passes over a water-cooled roll 14 in an inert atmosphere. The foil 10 is sprayed with a molten superalloy, e.g. Fe, Ni or Co alloys, from a plasma gun 16 or any other metallizing gun, supplied with powdered alloy from hopper 17. The molten alloy solidifies on the foil and the resulting composite is passed between rolls 18 to consolidate the strip 15. The operation may be repeated in order to produce strip of greater thickness. The foil 10 can be removed from the strip by passing the composite through an etching solution to dissolve it away from the strip 15 after cold rolling.
