Abstract

1,031,317. Casting processes. WARGONS A.B. Oct. 24, 1964 [Oct. 22, 1963], No. 42994/64. Heading B3F. A method of making an ingot comprises pouring molten metal into a mould and adding a granular or pulverulent metallic material to the surface of the molten metal at a distance from the wall of the mould so as to produce an ingot having a surface layer which is free from the added material. The added material is first supplied as comparatively coarse particles and then as comparatively fine particles, and an additional quantity of molten metal is added to the top of the ingot after the granular material has been added. The process may be applied to continuous casting molten metal and solid particles being alternately supplied to the mould. The particles, which are projected at high velocity into the molten metal, are cleaned and preferably supplied in a protective gas and may have a coating of, e.g., NaOH or NaF and be preheated. Iron or low alloy steel may be added to stainless steel to produce a coated ingot which is subsequently rolled to produce stainless steel compound sheet.
