Abstract

1,258,214. Sintered zinc sheet or strip; granulated zinc. INTERNATIONAL LEAD ZINC RESEARCH ORGANISATION Inc. March 16, 1970 [April 9, 1969], No. 12542/70. Headings C7D and C7X. Zn or Zn base alloy powders are hot rolled to sheet or strip with at least 80% thickness reduction in one pass. Zn or Zn base alloy particles preferably acicular with minimum dimension 0À2-2 mm. are produced by centrifugal casting and air or non-oxidizing gas quenching the granulated particles e.g. in N 2 . A continuous process may be operated as shown in Fig. 4 where the molten metal, alloy or mixture of constituents is granulated centrifugally at 30, the granules are pre-heated at 42 e.g. to within 100‹ C. of the melting temperature, and fed via metering feeder 50 and vibrating hopper 55 into rolls 70, slitter 91 and coiler 95. Rolls 70 may be pre-heated to required temperature and maintained at temperature by water sprays. The sheet may be finish rolled to required gauge. In addition to electrolytic Zn the following Zn alloys may be rolled: Zn-Fe-Pb-Cd; Zn-Cu-Ti; Zn-Ti-Cr; Zn-Al-Cu, all containing less than 3% alloying elements, and Zn-35/40% Al.
