Abstract
1,274,531. Alloy steel powder. A. O. SMITH-INLAND Inc. June 5, 1969 [June 26, 1968], No. 28498/69. Heading C7A. Finely divided alloy steel powder to be annealed and used in powder metallurgy processes consists, by weight of: Impurities may be Ti and Al each less than 0À05%, S less than 0À04% and P less than 0À035%. The powder, which has an apparent density greater than 2À6g/cc and a green density at a compaction pressure of 30 tsi greater than 6À4g/cc with lubricant is made by (1) atomizing a stream of molten steel by directing flat sheets of water thereagainst at an angle of 15-55 degrees with respect to the axis of the stream, (2) annealing the resulting particles in a reducing atmosphere at 1500‹-2100‹F. to soften the particles and reduce C to less than 0À05% and O 2 to less than 0À4%, and (3) breaking up the caked structure.
