The process is carried out in an inert or reducing atmosphere, containing not more than 10<SP>-5</SP> atmos. partial pressure of oxygen. Metal can be added to the crucible in several ways including the utilisation of an electrode of the reg'd metal, so that as the arc is struck molten metal from the electrode falls into the crucible. Both electrode and crucible are water-cooled and the crucible is of Cu or other conducting material. Examples relate to the production of particles of Nimonic (Registered Trade Mark) 105 and 115, and of Ti and Ti alloy. Other metals include Cr, Mn, Mg, Al and their alloys, e.g. stainless steel.
