Abstract
1305671 Purifying and alloying alloys INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI EO PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 14 May 1971 [29 June 1970] 14925/71 Heading C7D [Also in Divisions B3, H5] A method of plasma-arc refining of metals comprises placing a dummy-bar 2 in a cooled mould 3 connected to an electric power source, placing a charge 1 of metal on the dummy-bar, melting an outer shell of the charge 1 so as to form a bath 6 of molten metal between the wall of the mould and an unmelted core 8, and pulling the charge through the mould as its outer shell melts. A rotary or reciprocating rotary motion may be imparted to the mould, dummy-bar and charge 1 to ensure a uniform thickness of the refined outer shell. When the ingot formed is of rectangular cross-section, the plasma torches 5 are given a reciprocating movement so that the distance between them and the ingot remains constant during the rotary movement of the latter. Alloying additives and a flux may be fed to the surface of the molten metal bath 6 during the process which may be carried out in an atmosphere of argon, helium, hydrogen, or nitrogen, the latter resulting in the formation of an ingot having a nitrogen-alloyed outer shell and a nitrogen-free core.
