Abstract

1,137,951. Granulating metals; aluminium alloy. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Oct.29, 1965 [Nov.12, 1964], No.45947/65. Headings C7A and C7X. Elongate solid metallic particles are centrifugally formed from a molten metal (or alloy), such as Al, Al alloy e.g. Be-Al, Pb-Bi alloy, or Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Fe (including steel) or Be, by maintaining a wall 38 of liquid spaced from and circumscribing the perforate side wall(s) 34 of an open pot 30, the liquid e.g. water or ethyl alcohol having a B. P. below the M.P. of the metal and a temperature in at least that portion of the liquid wall 38 nearest the perforate side wall(s) of between the B.P and 100‹ F. below the B.P., and introducing the molten metal 40 into the rotating pot so as to eject elongate molten particles through the perforate side wall(s) and into the wall of liquid to solidify the particles in free-flowing elongate form. The molten particles may pass through air, nitrogen or CO 2 into the liquid. The wall of liquid may be maintained by forming a vortex of the liquid 36 in a stationary tank 10 using a disc 28 connected to and rotatable with the pot 30. Examples of Al alloys are specified; e.g. containing (a) 13% Si and 1% Fe, (b) 1% Ni and 1% B.
