Abstract
819,818. Conti n uous-casti ngmachines. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 19, 1956, No. 18975/56. Class 83 (1). In continuously casting light metal, the pouring jet is directed outwardly in such direction and at such velocity that the flow of metal is tangential with respect to at least one of the retaining surfaces for the molten-metal body, and the molten metal flows to the outer zone of the molten metal body in substantial sweeping contact with the retaining surfaces therefor, whereby a portion of the heat is abstracted therefrom, and thereafter the partially cooled molten metal flows inwardly toward the central portion of the molten metal body at a reduced velocity, where the partially cooled metal rapidly freezes. The apparatus is in most respects the same as that disclosed in Specification 757,568, which is referred to, but the molten metal is poured through a baffle 14, Figs: 3 and 4, having outlets 33 positioned on the diagonals of the baffle and the mould. Other apertures or nozzles 37, 38 may be positioned intermediate the corners of the baffle, which may also have a double bottom 35, 36, which may be filled with an insulating material, or alternatively a block of insulating material may be secured to the bottom of the baffle. In a modification, the baffle has a relatively small central cup portion and four diagonally projecting conduits for the passage of the metal outwardly. In a further modification, Fig. 5, a baffle for a circulr mould has a series of nozzles 43. The conditions, e.g. size and number of baffle outlets, pouring and withdrawal rates, &c., relating to the casting of aluminium alloy ingots of various sizes are quoted.
