In a process for cooling continuously-cast billets, e.g. of steel, the billet is sprayed with a cooling liquid from the point where it leaves the mould to the point where it is completely solidified, to withdraw only such a quantity of heat that the temperature of the marginal zone remains substantially constant from the leaving of the chill-mould to the solidification of the core, or falls gradually through not more than 200‹ C.
