Abstract
1425906 Casting composite articles UNION SIDERURGIQUE DU NORD ET DE L'EST DE LA FRANCE 31 Get 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 50554/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A process for casting composite article, e.g. rolls, shafts and ingots, having an outer skin portion and a centre portion formed of a metal of different composition, comprising bottom pouring into a mould a first molten metal M<SP>1</SP>, allowing the metal to cool until an outer solidified skin P has formed, discharging the remaining liquid portion of the first metal and simultaneously replacing it by a second metal M<SP>2</SP> poured in via the top of the mould, is characterized in that the mould is provided with a discharge orifice 8 having an adjustable valve 9 and the second metal is poured at a temperature higher than that of the first and at a rate such that the level of the liquid metal in the mould remains constant at N<SP>1</SP>. When all the liquid portion of the first metal M<SP>1</SP> has been discharged the valve 9 is closed. The metals M<SP>1</SP> and M<SP>2</SP> may be steels having different compositions, the first being poured at a temperature of 1460‹ C. and the secondat a temperature of 1570‹C. The wheel 10 may be calibrated to indicate when all of the first metal has been discharged. The mould may comprise upper and lower parts, 2 and 5 respectively, lined with sand, and a metal part 3 provided with coolant channels 4.
