Abstract
1,180,339. Continuous casting-machines. PHELPS DODGE COPPER PRODUCTS CORP. 28 May, 1968 [21 June, 1967], No. 25563/68. Heading B3F. A continuous casting-machine has a circular horizontal rotating trough mould 29 provided with a cooling station where the upper surface of the cast metal is solidified. When casting metals, such as " tough pitch " copper, which produce gas bubbles on cooling that compensate for the shrinkage in volume of the metal a stream of a non-oxidizing gas is directed on to the surface of the metal within the mould trough 29a at a point where the metal is molten but that is far enough away from the pouring spout 40 to have quiesced to form a flat surface. The product bar is formed with a flat surface (opposed to the usual concave surface) and is suitable for rolling. Molten metal from a pouring cup 36 (Fig. 2) is supplied to the trough 29a through a spout 40. The mould 29 has a hood 50 with a glass inspection port 60 and a gas exit 61. In Fig. 3 (a continuation of Fig. 2), Ar or N 2 is blown on to the metal surface by four nozzles 54 all pointing towards the spout 40. A valve 57 controls the gas flow to the nozzles. The gas stream in the hood flows in the opposite direction to the mould rotation.
