Abstract

708,632. Moulds. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 7, 1952 [Jan. 8, 1951], No. 511/51. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2) In a process for the continuous casting of metals, e.g. aluminium alloys, the molten metal is poured into an openended mould and at least part of the casting within the mould is directly cooled by transmission of liquid coolant through the mould wall. The mould has a part at least of its wall formed from powder so compacted that it is rigid enough but permeable to the liquid used to cool the mould. The mould may be jacketed or the liquid may be sprayed on as at 9, Fig. 2, the porous material 8 being dovetailed to end portions 6, 7 of solid metal. In another modification the porous material 3, Fig. 1, is arranged in a pocket 2 in the inner face of a solid metal mould 1. The fluid is supplied under pressure to an annular passage 4 by a pipe 5. This mould may be cooled also by an external spray. If desired porous material may be arranged at only part of the inner face of the mould, e.g. inserts may be arranged at intervals around the inner surface of the lower half in the case of a cylindrical mould or of the central area in the case of a slab mould. The powder may be copper or graphite and the mould have any desired cross section.
