Abstract

PURPOSE:To extent the life of a mold consderably and to reduce the production cost of purified metal by using a composite body of ceramics and graphite for a mold to be used for purification of metal and a graphite mold for the part below the solidification interface at the inside surface of the mold. CONSTITUTION:A bottom base 4 is placed in the lower opening of a composite mold wherein a graphite mold 2 is formed compsitely on the lower inside surface of a ceramic mold 1. Molten metal 3 is put in the mold and is kept at adequate temp. by means of heaters 6. This is cooled from the base 4 side by blowing a cooling medium through cooling pipes 7, whereby refined metal is deposited on the base 4. The base 4 is pulled down gradually, whereby a purified metal ingot 8 is obtained continuously thereon. The metal near the solidification interface 9 is agitated by an agitator 5 so that the impurities concd. near the solidification interface are dispersed in the molten metal.
