Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain purified metal in good yields by solidifying and growing the molten metal in a mold from the bottom part, and discharging the unsolidified molten metal then supplying fresh molten metal and again solidifying and growing the same. CONSTITUTION:Molten metal 5 of Al or the like to be refined is supplied into a mold 1 which is fitted with a bottom base 13 in the bottom part. The molten metal 5 is kept at the temp. suitable for crystallization with heaters 2. The molten metal 5 is cooled from the base 13 side and the base 13 deposited and solidified with a crystal is lowered slowly to make a purified ingot 7 gradually. At this time, a rotary agitator 6 is operated simultaneously to disperse the solute (e.g.; Fe, Si) discharged at a solidification interface 14 into the molten metal 5. Following to this, a cooling medium is released 8 to cool the molten metal 5. At the suitable point of the time when the concn. of the solute in the metal 5 increases, the metal 5 is sucked and discharged through an impure molten metal suction pipe 9 of a suction ladle 10. Next, the fresh molten metal 5 is supplied into the mold 1 through a supply trough 4, and again the metal is subjected to the operation of cooling, solidifying and discharging. By the repetition of such operation, the metallic ingot purified over the entire length of the ingot is obtained.
