Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an ingot with solidified fine dense crystal structure by subjecting molten steel poured into a bottom casting ingot case to a boil stirring action and turning motion due to gas at the same time to remove nonmetallic inclusions rising to the steel surface.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel 5 is cast in ingot case 7 on surface plate 1 by usual bottom casting. At the same time, neutral gas such as Ar or He is blown through porous brick 4 provided in pouring basin brick 2 of plate 1. The gas rises in molten steel 5 as bubbles 12 to exert a boil stirring action on steel 5. By this action nonmetallic inclusions dispersed or suspended in steel 5 collide, cohere, adhere to the bubbles, and rise to the uppermost part of the resulting ingot. The stirring action also makes the temp. distribution of the molten steel uniform, and it facilitates radiation of heat from the molten steel surface. Molten steel 5 is cooled by adiabatic expansion of the bubbles in steel 5 to obtain a clean ingot with fine dense crystal structure.
