Abstract

PURPOSE: To make cooling ability strong and constant and let production of cast ingot be rapidly and stably accomplished by providing a liquid tank in which cooling medium is contained and a cooling medium feeder for preventing deposition of vapor on the cast ingot.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal 1 in the second tundish 4 is poured onto a base member 8. The molten metal part A of the cast ingot descends while its circular cylindrical state is being maintained while its passes in an induction coil 5, thence it enters a water tank 7, where it is cooled to solidify in the cooling water. A cooling water feeder 6 is provided in the water tank 7, by which the cooling water is supplied to the peripheral surface of the high temperature cast ingot part B of the cast ingot. This prevents decrease in cooling ability in the water tank 7 owing to evaporation of the cooling water 12 in contact with the cast ingot part B of high temperature and degrading of heat transfer. Cooling ability is increased and the production of the cast ingot is made faster by the cooling method using this water tank 7 and cooling water feeder 6.
