Abstract
PURPOSE: To refine molten Al efficiently by increasing the temp. gradient of the liq. phase in an impurity thickened layer close to the solidification interface of the Al when a cooling body is put in the molten Al and rotated to precipitate high purity proeutectic Al on the surface.
CONSTITUTION: Molten Al 2 is charged in a crucible 1 and always kept at a temp. above the solidification temp. by heating with a heater 5. A hollow cooling body 3 made of refractory with superior heat conductivity such as graphite is immersed in the molten Al 2 and rotated around a shaft 4 while being cooled with a cooling medium such as air or water. The surface of the body 3 is cooled to a temp. below the solidification temp. of Al to precipitate high purity proeutectic Al 9 on the surface. At this time, by regulating the heating of the molten Al with the heater 5 and the cooling with the body 3, the Al solidifying speed on the surface of the body 3 is reduced, an impurity thickened layer close to the solidification interface is made thin, and the temp. gradient in the layer is increased. As a result, the formation of dendrite is prevented, and high purity Al having a smooth surface is precipitated efficiently.
