Abstract

A ferrosilicon alloy comprises .Si.8-15% .Ni.0.5-5.0% .Cu.1.4-25% with or without Al 0.08-0.5% and/or Mn 0.8-3.0%, the balance apart from incidental impurities being iron. The alloy is used in the form of a powder having a size of less than 60m and at most 5% of the particles of a size in the range 200-250m , the grains having a smooth and rounded off surface and a unit weight number of more than 7. The grains may be prepared by one of the following processes: (a) atomizing the molten alloy (1200-1600 DEG C.) using water, steam, air or nitrogen at a pressure of 1-2 atmospheres gauge.; (b) comminuting the molten alloy on a granulating disc or groove using water and/or air, or steam or nitrogen at a pressure of 1-20 atmospheres gauge; (c) grinding the cast alloy and at least superficially melting the particles at a temperature of above 850 DEG C. and cooling or chilling them. Specifications 741,553 and 798,269 are referred to.
