Abstract
1,144,827. Casting processes. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 29 Sept., 1966, No. 43546/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] In order to obtain a fine equiaxed grain structure, a Mg-base alloy (see Division C7) containing rare earth metals and Zn is cast at a temperature between 1190‹ and 1240‹ F. and cooled. The rare earth metal content, obtained for example by adding mischmetal, is up to 1%, the Zn at least 0À3% and there is at least 0À001% Fe. The alloy may be cast as a long ingot, in a mould with a separate bottom moved downward hydraulically when a head of metal has solidified on it, water being sprayed on the mould from pipes located annularly about the mould.
