Abstract
1,127,485. Casting processes. EDGAR ALLEN & CO. Ltd., and CARDINAL STEELS Ltd. 28 Feb., 1967 [1 March, 1966], No. 8870/66. Heading B3F. To improve the grain of a steel by making solidification more even, a ferrous powder is introduced within the stream of metal, e.g. by way of a tubular stopper rod as described in Specification 1,127,486, as it leaves the ladle or tundish, to act as a nucleating agent throughout the steel in an ingot-, a sand- or a continuouscasting-mould. The casting may be done in a vacuum or controlled atmosphere. The added powder may make up the total of iron required in the final steel or may have a composition corresponding to the final steel or be adjusted to produce the desired composition of the casting. For example, powders of HS, carbon, stainless or austenitic high temperature steel may be used. 1-10% of powder not exceeding 25 mesh BSS in size is used and the casting temperature of the metal should be within 20- 150‹ C. above its liquidus temperature.
