Abstract
1,259,286. Cooling moulds. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 20 Oct., 1969 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 49853/68. Heading B3F. In an electroslag remelting process, the coolant applied to the external wall of a mould 10 is confined to that portion of the mould which does not envelop the solidified ingot 18. This may be achieved by having a spray header 11 and trough 22 both of which can be raised or lowered by a screw 24 or hydraulic ram 25. In another embodiment, the header 11 is fixed and only the trough is movable. Alternatively, the mould may be surrounded by a jacket (26), (30) containing a coolant, the jacket being raised or lowered relative to the mould. In operation, the trough 22 or jacket (26) is gradually raised as the ingot is built up so that only that part of the mould wall above the level of the solidified ingot is cooled.
