Abstract
1322711 Making ferrous alloys BRITISH STEEL CORP 13 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 50609/69 Heading C7D An alloying addition is added to a ferrous metal by passing a gas through the ferrous metal heated to above its normal teeming temperature, creating turbulence in the metal and a turbulent zone at its surface, while adding the alloying addition at or adjacent to the turbulent zone and removing any toxic fumes generated; continuing to pass the gas until the metal reaches its normal teeming temperature, and teeming the metal into moulds. The gas may be an inert gas, such as argon. The alloying addition may be lead, selenium or tellenium, as pure metals, alloys or compounds, and may be finely divided. The ferrous metal may be one containing less than 2À0% carbon, and up to 0À50% Pb may be added. The gas may be admitted through a porous hide.
