Abstract

1322712 Ferrous alloys BRITISH STEEL CORP 13 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 50610/69 Heading C7D An alloying addition is made to ferrous metal by heating the metal in a furnace, tapping into a primary ladle at a temperature substantially above that at which it is customarily tapped for teeming into ingot moulds, teeming the metal from the primary ladle into a secondary ladle, adding the alloying material during the teeming into the secondary ladle whilst removing any toxic fumes, the teeming temperature being sufficiently high to ensure solution of the alloying material, holding the metal in the secondary ladle until its temperature is approximately equal to the customary teeming temperature for the metal and then teeming into moulds. The alloying material may be one or more of lead, selenium and tellurium, as the elements or in the form of alloys or as mineral compounds. The ferrous metal may be steel or steel alloy, particularly steels containing not over 2À0% carbon.
